FOR IT IS WRITTEN

For It Is Written: Elizabeth Wyn Wood, sculptor. Her name is inscribed in the iconic Welland-Crowland War Memorial, Chippawa Park, Welland. The Orillia-born sculptor was only 31 when in 1934, she won a competition of design proposals for the Welland-Crowland War Memorial. The work occupied her for almost five years. The fine surface carving was done by Louis Temporale, one of her former students. This monument is the last World War 1 memorial erected in Canada; its official unveiling took place Sept. 4, 1939, at the start of World War 2. (Photo by Joe Barkovich)
