WELLAND – Like a kid waiting for Christmas Eve, I have been waiting for Saturday night with great anticipation and great expectation.

We have a party of eight. We are going to the Christmas concert by the local band – gifted musicians and vocalists – Kindred.

I heard them this past summer, the closing act in the under-publicized and under-appreciated concert series, Variety Nites, in the Welland Community Wellness Complex theatre.

I wasn’t disappointed.

I caught them again, well their opening set that is, a few weeks back at Seaway Mall’s Ye Olde Squire.

I wasn’t disappointed.

Curiosity prompted me to inquire this week about the Christmas concert. You know why: There is Christmas-season music and there is Christmas-season music. Would it be a flurry of Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, or would it be more.

I wasn’t disappointed.

It will be more, much more.

The program is eclectic. It’s a mix of secular, contemporary, traditional, spiritual and Kindred’s signature, “roots” music, a selection of down east, blues, bluegrass, all amazing stuff because of the versatility of the musicians and the voices.

If you come looking for O Holy Night, Silent Night, Good King Wenceslaus, White Christmas, and more you’ll get it. But if you want pieces that aren’t so well known, or pieces that are overlooked in most concerts, you will be pleasantly surprised, I’m sure.

In her e-mail about Saturday’s concert, Kindred member Joni Romano wrote: “Our influences within our music are based within our own cultural roots and those that affect us. But then again, we are moved by a great song…that tells a great story!”

The concert, A Kindred Christmas, is Saturday, December 12 at the Welland Community Wellness Centre theatre, Lincoln St., 7pm to 9pm. Tickets are available from the office now, or at the door Saturday evening. They are $10 for centre members, $12 for non-members – and that’s a present in itself!
