 BIG HIGH SCHOOL REGATTA HERE THIS WEEKEND

WELLAND – The 38th annual South Niagara High School Invitational Regatta kicks off the rowing season here this weekend.

About 1,200 competitors from 73 teams will compete on the Great Dain course at Dain City. Racing takes places Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22. The first race both days is at 8 a.m.

Local schools taking part include E.L. Crossley, Notre Dame, Jean Vanier, Centennial and Lakeshore Catholic.

Spectator parking is available at the former John Deere parking lot, donation is $5. Free shuttle bus service is provided to and from the racing course finish line, south of the Dain City bridge.

 POPULAR PLANT SALE MAY 21

WELLAND – Welland Horticultural Society’s annual plant sale is a growing experience.

It is being held Saturday, May 21 at the Exhibition grounds, Building B, 1100 Niagara Street North. Hours are 9am to noon.

It features annuals, perennials, shrubs and more. Experienced gardeners to answer your gardening questions will be on hand.

 CELEBRATE VICTORIA DAY SUNDAY EVENING

WELLAND – The Victoria Day Glow Party and Fireworks Display is being held Sunday, May 22 at Welland Sports Complex; 90 Quaker Road, Welland.

Family activities at 7pm; fireworks at dusk (rain date for fireworks only Monday May 23, 2016); Admission is FREE

LIBRARY CLOSED ON VICTORIA DAY HOLIDAY

WELLAND –Both library branches will be closed on Monday, May 23 for Victoria Day. There are no items due on May 23, and you can place holds, check out e-books and renew your items any time, using our catalogue. Library staff hope you have a fun and safe long weekend!  COMPOST GIVEAWAY

WELLAND – Residents can pick-up compost at the following two landfill sites to May 31:

Bridge Street, Fort Erie (for all residents in Niagara region)

Niagara Road 12, West Lincoln (for residents of Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln and Pelham)

Restrictions and Details:While quantities last, or until May 31, 2016;Residents load the compost themselves – bring shovels and containers;Compost is bulk, not bagged;Maximum of 1 cubic meter per resident;Loads have to be secured and covered properly;Loads can not exceed vehicle weight limits.

PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP-OFF DAY

WELLAND – Niagara Region Public Health in partnership with Niagara Regional Police Service, Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association will be holding “Prescription Drug Drop-Off”.Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

This is an anonymous program – Feel free to remove any labels or black them out with a marker. No questions will be asked. All returned medications will be taken by police to be incinerated. This process is similar to what happens when they are dropped off at pharmacies.

In Welland, the drop-off site is Niagara Regional Police station, 5 Lincoln St.

 WELLAND LIBRARY IS HOLDING A TRUNK SALE
