Race With A View

Boats participating in today’s Head of the Welland race make their way down the former canal at Merritt Park, en route to the finish line at the Welland International Flatwater Centre. The race is also known as the Five Bridges Classic because athletes row under five bridges between start and finish: Main Street, Division Street, Lincoln Street, railway swing bridge and Ontario Road. About 1,000 athletes were expected to participate, some from as far as Massachusetts and California. Local crews taking part include South Niagara Rowing Club, Notre Dame Rowing Club, Brock University, St. Catharines and Ridley College. South Niagara Rowing Club is sponsor of the popular event.
