WELLAND – Notre Dame Jr. Irish won the SOSSA hoops championship on Wednesday.
In their opener, the Irish defeated MacKinnon Park of Caledonia 69-35 in Dillon Hall.
In the championship game, the Irish, 21-7 overall, defeated Saltfleet 76-70 in overtime. Saltfleet had advanced to the final with a win over Blessed Trinity.
Leading scorers for Notre Dame in the championship game were Andrew Zezela with 29 points, David Jones with 16 and Ryan Fitzgerald with 15.
The overtime game was described as “a thriller”.
The SOSSA championship ends the season for Notre Dame Jr. Irish as there is no OFSSA tournament and championship for junior boys, said Pat O’Leary, assistant coach.
