Idyllic Welland

Want to take a load off your feet? Or do you have some thinking you want to do in a place far from the madding crowd? This spot in Welland’s Chippawa Park will do nicely! The flowers are ornamental cherry blossoms, says Peter Boyce, Welland’s manager of parks, planning and maintenance. The Kwanzan Flowering Cherry is easily the showiest of all cherry trees. Its flowers aren’t just pink…. but ‘Double Pink,’ meaning you get twice as many petals and twice as many blooms as found on other trees. The tree blooms in large clusters of 3-5 flowers. These clusters are the thickest of all pink flowering trees and look similar to carnations. Kwanzans will begin to bloom in April and are also a delight in the fall, when they show golden autumn leaves that grab everyone’s attention. (Photo by Joe Barkovich. Idyllic Welland is a recurring feature on the blog.)
