WATER SPORTS MAKE BIG SPLASH IN ROSE CITY
WELLAND – It’s another busy weekend, competition wise, at the Welland International Flatwater Centre. Here’s the rundown:
August 4 – 6: The 11th Dragon Boat Canada Canadian Dragon Boat Racing Championships (CDBRC) at the Flatwater Centre. (Practice times were available Thursday August 3). The event is expecting 2,000 participants, and racing is on the WIFC north course. Racing starts Friday at 8am. This event is fun and exciting to watch, be sure to stop by to see some of the action.
SAFE TO SWIM AT YOUR FAVOURITE BEACH?
WELLAND – Check the water before you go swimming this weekend, or any day. Make sure the water is safe. This is a great service provided by Regional Niagara.

CANAL DAYS FESTIVAL IN PORT COLBORNE!
PORT COLBORNE – Wellanders are big supporters of Port Colborne’s great festival, Canal Days, which is celebrating its 39th year. Count many Wellanders among the 300,000 or so anticipated visitors.
The big event starts Friday, August 4 and runs through the Civic Holiday weekend to Monday, August 7. Come celebrate and explore the city’s Marine heritage, live entertainment, fabulous firework display, signature events, food, vendors and so much more! NIAGARA FALLS – The Niagara Parks Commission will be hosting a diverse lineup of activities and promotions for all visitors to enjoy while spending the Civic Holiday weekend in Niagara Parks. Two events:
Simcoe Days at Mackenzie Printery: Celebrate the Civic Holiday, also known as ‘Simcoe Day’, or ‘Emancipation Day’ in the African Canadian community, which honours the first Lieutenant Governor of this province. Join us during the holiday weekend from August 4 to 7, as the Mackenzie Printery will be featuring the works of Upper Canada’s first Lieutenant Governor, John Graves Simcoe and his contributions to shaping the future of Ontario. Admission is $6.25 for adults and $4.05 for children six to 12 years of age. Children five years and under are admitted free at all Niagara Parks attractions. The Mackenzie Printery is open daily from 10am to 5pm, with free parking available.
Free Admission to the Laura Secord Homestead and Old Fort Erie: Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Niagara River Corridor as they experience the sights and sounds of a fort under siege at Old Fort Erie and the enchanting stories and adventures of Canada’s most famous heroine, Laura Secord, at the lovingly restored Laura Secord Homestead in the historic village of Queenston, Ontario. Niagara Parks is proud to offer free admission to Old Fort Erie and the Laura Secord Homestead on Monday, August 7. Both sites are open daily from 10am to 5pm with free parking available.

WELLAND – The Welland Public Library has launched two new social media accounts: Instagram and Pinterest!
The Instagram account will feature library staff, events and patrons, as well as new arrivals to the collection. It will also share Instagram Stories of events, programs, and fun things around the library. Follow here: @wellandlibrary

BINGO, ELIMINATION DRAW BENEFIT IRISH HOOPSTERS
WELLAND – Having accepted an invitation to play in a holiday hoops tournament in south Florida, Notre Dame senior boys basketball team is holding a bingo fundraiser in September.
The bingo is one of two fundraisers scheduled for fall. The date is Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Delta Bingo, Niagara Falls. Tickets are $15 which includes two single books which contain regular games and the regular jackpot only. Also one $5 voucher for use in the Tap Tix machines.
Tickets can be purchased from Coach Gallagher, 905-788-2636 or Chris Biggar, 905-380-2593 until school starts in September. The second fundraiser is an elimination draw evening. More details will be released at a later date.
The senior Irish will be in the All-Catholic New Year’s Holiday Tournament in Miami the first week of January 2018. The tourney is being hosted by Belen Jesuit Prep School. The eight-team tournament features six south Florida teams, a team from New York City, and the Irish.

WELLAND – Meet Mayor Frank Campion at the Merritt Island parking lot Monday mornings at 7:30am for a 40 Minute Walk on Merritt Island. Because of the holiday weekend, the next is scheduled on Monday, August 14.
