Tribute To Fallen Welland Canal Workers

Markers in Holy Cross Cemetery for three Welland Canal Fallen Workers who died during construction of the Welland Ship Canal (1913 to 1932-33). The names on each, from left: John Bode, 1896 to 1928; Charles A. McInnis, 1903-1928; Peter Szolonyik, 1901-1928. The inscription at the bottom of each reads Welland Canal Fallen Worker. Several others are also to be found in Woodlawn Cemetery. We arrived at Holy Cross at 3:05pm for a tour and talk that was to have started at 2:45pm but no one was on site, probably because of the downpour earlier. A tour was also scheduled at Woodlawn Cemetery this afternoon. (Photos by Joe Barkovich)
