CAREGIVERS MEMORY LOSS WORKSHOP
WELLAND – This free workshop is for people caring for loved ones with memory loss. Facilitators from Welland McMaster Family Health Team will share information about management strategies for caregivers, caregiver burnout, and community resources. CLINIC OFFERS SAFETY TIPS, MAINTENANCE
WELLAND – St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church is hosting its 12th annual, free Block Party and Bike Clinic, Saturday May 5, 10am to noon. Learn the ABCs of bicycle care, learn the proper way to wear your helmet, bring your bikes for free maintenance including seat adjustment, lubrication etc, enjoy burgers and dogs. St. Matthew’s is at Griffith and Kent streets.
SUPPORT AWARENESS FUN-RAISER BY JOINING THE WALK
WELLAND – Arid Recovery Homes is hosting the 19th annual 5-10k Walk-a-Thon Saturday, May 5 along Merritt Island pathway. Join in to raise awareness, promote discussion and lessen the stigma surrounding addictions and mental health. Registration opens at 9am, walk starts at 10am. REGION ANNOUNCES COMPOST GIVEAWAY
WELLAND – To celebrate Compost Awareness Week, Niagara Region will be hosting a compost giveaway from May 7 to May 11. In exchange for compost, residents must donate a non-perishable food item or cash in support of local charities. Visit niagararegion.ca/waste for more info.
STUDENT PORTFOLIOS WILL BE FEATURED AT AWARDS SHOW
WELLAND – Student photographers will be on the other side of the camera lens this evening (Friday, April 27) as Niagara College celebrates photography creativity at its eight annual Photography Awards Show.
Both the college community and the public are welcome to attend the event, which will be held at the Welland Campus. The show will begin at 7 p.m. in the Applied Institute Auditorium, followed by a print gallery reception in the Learning Commons.
“This is a great opportunity for the public to see quality work by today’s students who are tomorrow’s premier photographers,” said Stephen Dominick, professor and program coordinator for NC’s Photography program, School of Media Studies. Several awards will be presented including Best of Show Trophy (sponsored by Bell Arte Camera), Associate Dean’s Award of Excellence, Premium Building Group Architectural Photography Award, Tym Hrycusko Memorial Trophy, Big Heart Award, and Portfolio of the Year (sponsored by Nikon Canada).
The ceremony will also feature the unveiling of Inception8 – a highly collectible annual publication of student portfolios.

POPULAR HORT SOCIETY PLANT SALE IN MAY
WELLAND – Welland Horticultural Society is hosting its annually-held plant sale Saturday, May 19. Hours are 9 am – noon, at 1100 Niagara Street North, the Niagara Regional Fairgrounds in Building B.
Shoppers will find mostly perennials that have been generously donated by the society’s members. They will have a few vegetables, herbs and native plants as well. Experienced gardeners will be there to answer questions. Donations from the public are also welcome. The day of the sale the doors open at 9 am. Terms: cash only, no taxes.
YMCA HEALTHY KIDS DAY
WELLAND – Niagara Centre YMCA is hosting Healthy Kids Day Sunday, April 29, 1pm to 4 pm. This is a national day dedicated to improving the health and well-being of kids. A FREE event for everyone in the community, participating YMCAs will be open to the public with fun and healthy activities for the entire family.
MANDOLIN ORCHESTRA PRESENTS ROMANCE
WELLAND – The Mandolin Orchestra is holding this concert Sunday, May 27, 3pm at the Welland Community Wellness Complex. Tickets are $12 for passholders; $15 for non-passholders. International favourites, North American tunes, Broadway hits, Celtic music, Pops, light classics – the Mandolin Orchestra of Niagara does it all. Under the direction of Sylvia Hlywka Brabson, this group of musicians presents a wide range of music sure to delight any audience.

B4 MIDNIGHT TO PLAY WELLNESS CENTRE STAGE
WELLAND – The city’s Friday Night Live program presents B4 Midnight, a Niagara country/folk band. B4 Midnight is a versatile trio featuring Gord Watt on guitar and vocals, Kirk Smith on fiddle, Jeff Friesen on bass and introducing Tania Di Paolo. Watt and Smith have been playing together for over 25 years, and were part of the Glenridge Boys. B4 Midnight has over 200 songs in their collection, and play originals , classic country, folk, old rock, modern indie and more. The performance takes place Friday, May 18, 7pm in the theatre at Welland Community Wellness Complex. This is a free event.
