CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR ROSS BEARD
WELLAND – The distinguished artist, Ross Beard, will be remembered and paid tribute at a Celebration of Life service Sunday, February 17, from 1pm – 5pm at Royal Canadian Legion, 383 Morningstar Avenue, Welland. Mr. Beard, 65, passed Friday, February 8 at Welland Hospital.
He was well known, far and near, for his paintings, many of which were of local landscapes, including Dain City, where he grew up. For Welland’s Festival of the Arts in the late 1980s, he was commissioned by the organizing committee to paint three murals, two of them in downtown Welland and one on Niagara Street North.

WELLAND – 8th annual Julia’s Hope Cup Pond Hockey Tournament Saturday, February 16 at Welland’s Chippawa Park. This popular event celebrates the life of Julia Turner and raises funds for her most cherished cause, The Hope Centre. COLLEGE TO HOST VOLLEYBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
WELLAND – The 2019 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship is being held at Niagara College. The competition is scheduled  March 7 through  March 9, according to a web page about the championship. Matches are scheduled March 7, 8, 9 with the bronze medal match, gold medal match and closing ceremonies taking place the evening of March 9. Also taking place are: awards banquet, coaches meeting and athletic therapists meeting, all on March 6.
Names of participating teams and other information will be announced soon.

CITY’S FAMILY DAYS HOURS

PRAYER SERVICE AT HOLY TRINITY
WELLAND – A World Day of Prayer service on Friday, March 1 will be hosted by Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Division Street. The service will start at 1:30pm.

FAMILY FUN DAY AND FAMILY DAY FREE SKATE
WELLAND – Looking for something to do on Family Day? Have some fun with the family at the Welland Community Wellness Complex and the Welland Main Arena. Donations of non-perishable food items are appreciated. This is a free family-friendly event. Monday, February 18, 10am-2pm. More info on city website.

LIBRARY BRANCHES CLOSED ON HOLIDAY MONDAY
WELLAND – All branches of Welland Public Library will be closed Monday, February 18 for Family Day. Be sure to stock up before then or use the online resources which are available 24/7.
The library encourages folks to read together as a family during the weekend to promote literacy.

THIS TALK WON’T PUT YOU TO SLEEP!
WELLAND – Representatives from the Welland McMaster Family Health Team lead talks on a variety of healthy living topics. Each session includes a question and answer period.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR HUMANITARIAN AWARD
WELLAND – T. Roy Adams was an eminent Niagaran, well known throughout the region, Canada, and abroad for his service to God, his country and his fellow citizens. In his memory, Niagara Region initiated a memorial award in 2003 to honour a resident of Niagara who best exemplifies Roy’s values and dedication to community service; a person who sees volunteerism as an integral part of their life. (Welland resident Paul Turner was the 2016 recipient of the award.)

ORCHESTRUM TO PERFORM AT WELLNESS CENTRE
WELLAND – Catch the band performing all of the classics, including Elvis, Johnny Cash, The Beatles and more. Tickets on sale now. Refreshments and door prizes included in ticket price. Friday, February 22, 7pm in the Theatre at Welland Community Wellness Complex. Tickets are $5 for passholders, $7 for non-passholders.

MAYOR’S COFFEE BREAK
WELLAND – Join Mayor Frank Campion at the Welland Community Wellness Complex for coffee and an update on what’s happening in Welland. This is a free event. Pre-registration is required. Thursday, February 21, 10:45am to noon.

HARVEST KITCHEN SEASON IN WELLAND WINDING DOWN
WELLAND – Welland’s Harvest Kitchen program is in its 23rd season. The weekly schedule is:
Sundays: Central United Church, 12 Young St., 5pm; Mondays: Eglise du Sacre-Coeur, 72 Empire St., 5:30pm; Tuesdays: Hope Centre, 570 King St., 5:30pm; Wednesdays: St. Kevin Roman Catholic Church, 307 Niagara St., 5pm; Thursdays 5pm for all: first Thursday of the month, Hope Centre, second Thursday, Southridge Community Church, 414 River Rd., third Thursday, Holy Trinity Anglican Church (use the market square door at the back), fourth and fifth Thursdays, Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 300 Chaffey St. and new this season, third and fourth Fridays, 5pm: Southridge Community Church.
The program ends March 31.
