Landmarks

Flower bed, Niagara Street and Riverbank. This eye popper showcases tulips in early spring and then is turned into one of the city’s themed beds celebrating local groups, anniversaries and other events through summer and fall. Its high profile location makes it a head turner for pedestrians and folks who drive by. It’s a joyful paean to spring’s arrival as evident in this photo from April 2023. The view makes it special too. A new feature, Landmarks will appear on the blog from time to time. Joe Barkovich photo.

Landmarks

When was the last time you had a close look at this wall-art masterpiece at the corner of East Main Street and Hellems Avenue in downtown Welland. Initiated by the well known artist and activist James Takeo with participation of several associates, it’s a superb visual storyteller whose images speak beautifully about things that should be near and dear to the hearts of Wellanders of any age or background. Local history, culture and identity are captured in easily recognizable imagery presented in glorious colours. It won me over as one of Welland’s most important modern-day landmarks shortly after its completion. A new feature on the blog, Landmarks will appear from time to time. Joe Barkovich photo.
