City Celebrates Earth Day With Free Tree Giveaway Initiative

WELLAND – The City of Welland, with support from its Green Advisory Committee, is hosting a free tree giveaway event for residents of Welland. Pre-registration is required through the city’s Active Portal.

This initiative promotes environmental sustainability and community beautification by allowing residents to plant trees in their yards. Planting instructions to ensure long-term health and viability of the trees are included.

Residents can choose from six different tree species, each selected for suitability to the local climate and soil conditions. The species include maple, oak, hickory, pine, and spruce. Quantities are limited, so residents are encouraged to register early to secure their preferred species. Trees are in one-gallon pots and, depending on the species, are one to four feet tall.

“Trees are pillars of our community, providing shade, beauty, and a sense of connection to nature,” said Jessica Ruddell, director of community services. “By offering free trees to residents, we are not just giving away saplings; we are planting the seeds of a greener, more sustainable future for our city.”

The tree pickup will occur at the Welland Farmers Market, starting during the Earth Day Extravaganza event on April 20. Pickup will continue Saturday, April 27, and May 4, during the regular farmers market hours of 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Each registered address is eligible to receive one tree.

Residents must complete the registration process online to register for their free tree. During registration, individuals are required to provide their name and address, which must match the ID presented when picking up the tree. This requirement ensures that each tree is distributed to a confirmed Welland resident.
