For the second time in two years, a member of the Niagara College community has earned a prestigious national award recognizing exceptional leadership and significant contributions to student success.

Michele O’Keefe, Director, Athletics and Student Engagement, was presented with a silver Leadership Excellence Award for Managerial Staff from Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) on April 30 during its 2024 CICan Connection Conference in Calgary.

Honourable Mentions also went to Niagara College for the Excellence in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award, and to Reginald (Reggie) Williams for the Leadership Excellence Award for Students.

O’Keefe, formerly the CEO and president of Canada Basketball, joined Niagara College in 2018—the same year she was awarded the Leadership in Sport Award at the Canadian Sport Awards, Canada’s premier event for national sport achievement and leadership recognition.

In the years since, O’Keefe’s commitment to promoting sport as a tool of empowerment—especially for women—has remained steadfast. At Niagara College, she’s been a constant source of encouragement for students, athletes, coaches and employees who are motivated by her genuine and inspiring leadership style.

O’Keefe, however, credits the college for creating an environment where she can help student and staff flourish.

“I feel very fortunate to work at Niagara College,” she said. “The special environment we have allows me to have influence in building an atmosphere where our students and staff can participate in programs, events and teams that will help them for life. The collaborative nature of Niagara College—combined with the staff we have in Athletics and Student Engagement—naturally builds programs that put our students in the spotlight.

“I’m very grateful to Niagara College for nominating me for this prestigious award,” she added. “To know that the Knights family feels that my leadership is valuable is a tremendous feeling.”

Highly respected in the field of sport, O’Keefe has received numerous accolades and awards for her visionary leadership, including the City of Welland’s esteemed H.L. Cudney Memorial Award for her contributions to basketball, and an Executive Award of Merit in 2020 for her role formalizing a structure for the development of basketball officials. In 2020, she was also a runner-up for the International Olympic Committee Women and Sport Awards.

O’Keefe is the past Board Chair of the Ontario Sport Network (OSN) and is among a small group of Canadian athletic leaders to sit on world sports boards. From 2014-2023, she served on the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Americas Board and the FIBA Central Board, making her a top female policymaker in international sport.

Throughout her career she has played an integral role in shaping sport policy and continues to build capacity for sport excellence at the local, provincial, national and international levels through her volunteer work.

Among O’Keefe’s recent accomplishments is a partnership with the City of Welland to launch the first-ever Girls Sport Day in 2022, which provides girls between the ages of six and 12 the opportunity to try a variety of sports to build confidence and instill a sense of belonging in sport.

She also held a spot on the board of directors and served as Chair of the Legacy Committee for the Niagara 2022 Summer Games.

Niagara College President Sean Kennedy said O’Keefe’s leadership at the College is shaping a legacy of excellence in sport and a passion for community building.

“Michele’s unique ability to bring people together and drive collaboration in support of students is infectious,” Kennedy said. “Like any great coach, she leads by example, nurturing talent and leveraging connections to build people up and bring out their best. Michele embodies Niagara College’s welcoming, passionate and trailblazing characteristics. She is warm, approachable and pragmatic, and her leadership inspires trust and serves as a magnet for new partnerships and connections.”

The CICan Awards of Excellence recognize and promote excellence within Canadian colleges and institutes, while showcasing the extraordinary contributions of individuals to their college/institute communities.

“The impact of the college and institute sector is felt in the success of our students and the partnerships we build across our communities,” said CICan President and CEO Pari Johnston. “The exceptional leaders within our institutions are the key drivers of that impact. Congratulations, Michele, on your Leadership Excellence Award for Managerial Staff.”

CICan’s Leadership Excellence Award for Managerial Staff recognizes an individual or team who has made an exceptional contribution within their institution and within the community it serves.

O’Keefe was presented with the award at the silver level on April 30 at CICan’s Awards of Excellence Luncheon.

City Of Welland Finalizes $35M Sale With LIV Communities For Northern Reach development

WELLAND – The City of Welland and LIV Communities closed the sale agreement for Northern Reach — land situated to the west of the recreational canal from Woodlawn Road and north to Merritt Road — on April 23. This sale marks a significant milestone in the City’s ongoing development efforts, bringing new opportunities for residents and enhancing the community’s vibrancy.

The sale, encompassing approximately 152 acres of prime real estate, was finalized for a total of $35 million. This transaction is the culmination of a rigorous process that commenced in August 2021. After a thorough and thoughtful evaluation, Welland City Council chose LIV Communities as the developer in 2022.

”We’re excited to see this project move forward and are confident that LIV Communities will deliver a development that enhances our city,” said Mayor Frank Campion. ”This development will provide much-needed housing options and create new connections within our community.”

The development is projected to include approximately 3,800 to 4,000 dwelling units, catering to diverse housing needs. Moreover, the project prioritizes connectivity, with comprehensive plans to seamlessly integrate the new development with existing neighbourhoods and the surrounding area, fostering a strong sense of community and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

“Northern Reach, to be branded as Lock and Quay, will expand the recreational corridor by providing opportunities to connect new and existing residents to the improved amenities along the linear open space,” said LIV Communities President Aaron Roque. “By transforming the overall development vision through urban design principles, this development serves to carry on our tradition of building immaculate homes and master planned communities. We thank the City of Welland for putting their trust in us and we are excited to make this vision a reality.“

One of the development’s key features will be its connectivity to the recreation trail, providing residents with easy access to outdoor amenities. LIV Communities has also committed to constructing parks and a pedestrian bridge to Merritt Island, further enhancing the availability of recreational offerings for residents.

As the City of Welland continues to grow and evolve, partnerships with developers like LIV Communities play a crucial role in shaping its future. The City looks forward to working closely with LIV Communities to ensure the successful realization of this exciting development project.

View From The Bridge

The view from Woodlawn Bridge as we crossed the recreational waterway this morning, Saturday, April 28 shortly after 10 a.m. heading to Welland market. Saw the rowers almost last second as it was raining at the time and I hadn’t expected anyone to be on the water. Keep up the good work, rowers! /View From The Bridge is a recurring feature on the blog. Joe Barkovich photo.

NHL Playoffs: Back To The Crystal Ball For Western Conference Picks

By WAYNE REDSHAW

It’s been a longtime since a Canadian-based team won the Stanley Cup. In fact, the last time a Canadian squad drank bubbly from the Cup was 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Los Angeles Kings in five games. Coincidently, that was the same year that Gary Bettman became the Commissioner of the National Hockey League.

Since then the Cup has been owned by American-based teams. Five times, a Canadian team qualified for the finals but finished on the losing side of the ledger. Twice, the Vancouver Canucks made it to the finals losing in seven games both times, first to the New York Rangers in 1994 and then to the Boston Bruins in 2011.

Calgary Flames made it to the finals in 2004 only to lose to Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The others were the Ottawa Senators, who lost in five games in 2007 to the Anaheim Ducks and the Montreal Canadiens who bowed out to Tampa Bay in five games in 2021.

With the playoffs just underway hockey buffs are wondering can a Canadian team finally end the lengthy Cup drought? There are four Canadian teams who qualified for playoffs — the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Eastern Conference and the Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference.

Of course, before the finals there are three rounds to be played. Here in Part Two are my fearless predictions on the four opening rounds of Western Conference playoffs.

Golden Knights vs Stars.

The defending Cup champs the Vegas Golden Knights finished in the second wild card spot in the West so they they have drawn the top seed in the Dallas Stars. Last year Vegas advanced to the finals by  disposing of the Stars in six games in the Conference final.

I feel the Stars are vastly improved over last year so they should dethrone the champions. They have great depth and quality goaltending, especially with Jake Oettinger. Offensively, the Stars are loaded with Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Matt  Duchene, Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski who can deliver.

The Golden Knights were hard hit with injuries this season and it showed on the ice. Captain Mark Stone missed the final 26 games because of a lacerated spleen. He’s skating but whether he’s 100% for this series  is questionable. And the Knights encountered other injury woes with Jack Eichel, Shea Theodore and Alex Pietrangelo all missing from the lineup during the season.

Besides the injuries, I am not impressed with the Vegas goaltending duo Logan Thompson and Adin Hill.

Prediction: Stars in five games

Avalanche vs Jets

The Colorado Avalanche slumped down the homestretch while the Winnipeg Jets finished the regular season in style winning eight in a row. The Jets also won all three games over the Avs  and outscored them 17-4.

For that reason, I am picking the Jets. However, it won’t be easy. The playoffs are different from the regular season so I won’t be surprised if this series goes the limit.

The difference maker in the series will be between the pipes and I like the Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck. I am simply not sold on the Colorado goaltending. The Avs are fortunate to have Cale Makar, one of the best all-round blue liners in the league.

Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen should make it an interesting series. However, the Jets have Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Tyler Toffoli and Josh Morrissey to answer the bell for them.

This should be an exciting series from start to finish and don’t be surprised if overtime is necessary for a few games.

Prediction:  Jets in seven games.

Kings vs Oilers.

The first couple months into the regular schedule the Edmonton Oilers were a joke despite having a talented lineup. Fortunately, management stepped in, saw the problem and made a coaching change.

The Oilers were a completely different team after the change. They started scoring and winning and there’s no reason it can’t continue into the playoffs against the Los Angels Kings. It is the third showdown between the two clubs in the playoffs with the Oilers winning the first two.

Former Leaf Zach Hyman had a banner year for the the Oilers potting 54 goals. And with Connor McDavid at the controls the Oilers should have no problems putting away the Kings. McDavid also has an excellent supporting cast with the likes of Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and  Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse on the bluline.

The Kings have some scorers with Trevor Moore (31), Kevin Fiala (29), Adrian Kempe (28) and Ange Kopitar (26). They just don’t have enough depth to match the Oilers.

  Prediction: Oilers in five games.

Predators vs Canucks

Vancouver Canucks won the Pacific Division for the first time since 2013 and hosted a playoff game Sunday for the first time in nine years. They qualified for the playoffs in 2020 but due to Covid all Western Conference games were played in Edmonton with no fans in attendance.

This series will feature two quality defencemen with the Canucks’ Quinn Hughes and the Predators’ Roman Josi. Quinn led all defencemen in the NHL with 92 points on 17 goals and 75 assists. Josi ranked third with 85 points which included a league leading 23 goals.

J.T. miller led the Canucks scoring compiling 103 points on 37 goals and  66 assists. Brock Boeser was the Canucks’ top sniper with 40.

The Predators earned the first wild card in the west thanks to a 18-game point streak from February 16 to March 28. In that streak they went 16-0-2.

Filip Forsberg led the Preds offensively with 48 goals and 46 assists for 94 points followed by Josi with 85.

Goaltending appears to be pretty even with Thatcher Demko likely to go the distance for the Canucks and Juuse Saros for Nashville.

  Prediction: Canucks in seven games.
